The Commemoration of the May 8, 1945 Massacres: Honoring the Memory of the Martyrs and Upholding the Nation’s Legacy

On the occasion of the National Day of Memory, marking the painful commemoration of the May 8, 1945 massacres, we recall with deep respect and solemn reflection the sacrifices of our valiant martyrs who fell in defense of freedom, dignity, and national sovereignty, during one of the most atrocious crimes committed by French colonialism against the Algerian people.
On that day, Algerians took to the streets in peaceful demonstrations to demand their legitimate right to freedom and independence. However, the colonial repressive machinery responded with horrific massacres that claimed thousands of victims in Sétif, Guelma, Kherrata, and several other regions of the country. These events remain a lasting testimony to colonial brutality and to the resilience of the Algerian people.
Commemorating this painful memory is not only a reminder of past suffering, but also a renewed commitment to preserving the message of the martyrs, safeguarding the national memory, and passing it on to future generations, in tribute to those who sacrificed their lives so that Algeria may live free and independent.
Eternal glory to our valiant martyrs,
and peace and mercy upon their pure souls.
